Alan in Colorado asked: I want to work as a personal trainer. I don’t have a college background in exercise or anything. Are the certifications like AFPA for real? They seem to be basically correspondence tests that charge like 500$ to get “certified”. Is something like this legit on a resume?

planty asked: I am thinking of hiring a personal trainer for diet and exercise help. I have been battling hypertension for a few years now. I recently had a bad exacerbation of HTN a few weeks ago, and put on new blood pressure meds. I am 5′3 120lbs. Weight is not my problem, but I would like a trainer to assist me in a cardiac workout slowly and build up. I have had a full cardiac workup and loads of bloodwork which all came back normal, except cholesterol a little high. ( Heart disease runs in my family…BAD!) Anyway how do personal trainers work? Do they come to your house, or do you usually work at a gym, and they won’t overwork me will they? And lastly, about how much do they cost??

p.y.t asked: I live in the East Bay in the Bay Area of Northern California and I’m looking for a FEMALE personal trainer. I belong to a gym, but at the location I go to all the trainers are men and I just don’t feel comfortable. I am by no means a rich woman, so I can’t afford to meet with someone daily, I just want to meet once a week for about 3 or 4 weeks, and I need an exercise and meal plan. Any ideas or referrals?

chema129 asked: I eat healthy, exercise but it seems that no matter what I try I don’t seem to be losing weight. People keep telling me to eat a low fat diet but the doctor told me that eating low fat is what killed my gall bladder. He said that everything in moderation. However it seems that if I eat too much protein I get sick, if I eat low fat I get sick. I am so confused until I am on the verge of just giving up. I try to balance it out but I don’t seem to lose a pound. Can someone help? I need realistic help. I have a very understanding family but I don’t want to make them suffer with special diet. I can prepare two meals for dinner if need be but it would be easier to just prepare one. Any suggestions? I am also looking for something long term. More like a life change as apposed to a diet.

Jessye asked: I’m a third year college student and am looking to switch my major over to a B.S. in exercise science. I want to know what it takes to be a personal trainer. Not only what kind of education and certification you need, but also any other skills that are essential. I’m in NY if that makes any difference.
